LA NEWS! - A federal court ruling has stated that the 321 Studios has to stop the production of software that gives you the ability to copy DVD's. This comes as a major victory to Hollywood and the large movie studios to stop the piracy of copyrighted material.
Judge Illston of the United States District Court wrote, "This court enjoins plaintiff 321 Studios from manufacturing, distributing, or otherwise trafficking."
There was no response from the 321 Studios.
321 and Hollywood's studios were battling over lost revenue totaling in the billions if 321 was allowed to continue the selling of the DVD Copy Plus software or the DVD X Copy software.
Hollywood Studios and The Motion Picture Association of America state they will be loosing almost three billion each year from VHS analog copying.
This would also allow the making of DVD copies for sale on the black market and the internet furthering the lose of revenue.
The boundaries of the 1998's Digital Millenium Copyright Act have been reached. This Act allows for the protection of those holding copyrights the suffering from illegal burning of a movie, music, book, and television programs, not to mention other media.
321 Studios countered with the fact that the software is protecting the owners of the DVD movies because of the chance of preservation of their original copies if an accident or destruction occurred. They also claim that the DMCA gave permission for the DVD software to be utilized by the owners of the DVD's only.
Hollywood Studios has argued that the software is able to tear down the encryption of the DVD taking the copyright protection away and that this does not comply with the DMCA guidelines.
